In the parish of Knockando lies the quaint village of Archiestown. Archiestown hotel suites have all the facilities and services a person would expect of high quality accommodation, including rooms with tea/coffee making facilities, a television and radio, great views of the local area as well as a 24 hour manned reception desk.
It was founded by Sir Archibald Grant from Monymusk in the year 1760. Sir Archibald had inherited the Highland Estate when he married. He established a community of weavers of linen, however, in 1783 a fire destroyed several of the houses that had been built. He then went on to sell the estate to a local man who had made a small fortune whilst living in London and Canada. Robert Grant then became the Laird of Wester Elchies in the year 1783 and lived in the mansion. Charles, his son, inherited the estate and established what was known as Charlestown of Aberlour in the year 1812. He was not married when he passed away and so James William, his brother, went on to become the third Laird. Although he was absent from the estate for much of his life (he lived in India for many years) he still cared very much for the people and the estate. He provided financial assistance as well as materials and land for churches in Aberlour and Archiestown after the Disruption. James' son William, who was unmarried remained at Carron House until he inherited the title of Laird. The Wester Elchies mansion was then sold to a man named Kurt Hahn from Gordonstoun and was demolished during the 1960s. The last Laird, named Archie, passed away in the year 1951 without an heir.
The village here has a lively atmosphere and is a welcoming community. It has been relatively self sufficient for the last few years and has its own church, school, district nurse, blacksmith, undertaker and police station. In Archiestown hotel locations are close to all the local amenities one needs. The village has been established as a Conservation Village and to this day still retains quite a lot of its original character. The community spirit of this charming village can be seen in its regular get-togethers and festivities including Scots Night, the annual Fete, Christmas Carol singing as well as numerous other events throughout the rest of the year. Archiestown hotel rooms offer stunning views of the idyllic countryside setting.
Just five miles from Archiestown Village is the Glen Grant Distillery and Garden. Here one can explore the fascinating processes of whisky making as well as the life story of the most famous guardian of the distillery, Major James Grant. The fresh, spirited and light taste of the whiskey here is reflected in the scenic countryside setting of the whiskey distillery. Visitors can relax here and sample the subtle and unique flavors of Glen Grant Whiskey in Major Grant's study, take a guided tour of the traditional warehouse and distillery or enjoy the pleasant surroundings of the Victorian garden outside. There is also a coffee shop within the distillery.
Balvenie Castle is also only about a 10 minute drive from the village of Archiestown, located near Dufftown within the Moray region. The castle was originally called Mortlach and was constructed in the 12th century by a family called the Comyns. It was altered and extended during the 15th and 16th centuries.
The castle remained unused during the 14th century. In the 15th century it came into use again by the Black Douglases. The structure was forfeited during a rebellion by the Douglases against King James II and was then granted to a man named John Stewart who was the first Earl of Atholl. The castle was also used as a garrison throughout the Jacobite rebellion. The castle was then abandoned in the 1720s but again served as a garrison for Government troops in the year 1746. Today what remains of the castle is managed and maintained by Historic Scotland. The remains are open for public viewing throughout the summer months. Balvenie whiskey is made by a distillery named William Grant&Sons which can be found next to the remains of the castle. For a relaxing and refreshing holiday, look no further than Archiestown village.
